Goals / Metas:

This course is designed to help you achieve a basic command of spoken and written Spanish. All classroom activities will be conducted in Spanish from day one. No English is ever to be spoken by you or me in this classroom from the moment we walk in. English will be used exclusively during translation exercises and, occasionally, to deliver information on assignments or to impart special instructions.

 Rules of the Game / Reglas del juego:

I. Learning another language is one of the most challenging and worthwhile experiences you will ever undertake. It is, however, fairly time consuming. It will test your powers of memorization, organization, discipline, and improvisation. Ours is a collective effort and thus preparedness is of the essence. Each day, review what has been covered in class, do your laboratory practice as needed, complete your workbook exercises as needed, and work on all other assigned activities as indicated. Your classmates and I will expect that you will study the assigned material prior to coming to class. This means studying the grammatical points, vocabulary, exercises, etc. You are also to study all other sections and materials to be discussed during class time. Your final grade is extremely dependent on the caliber of your daily class participation: (25%+).

II. Continued exposure to the language is essential in order to achieve our goals. Punctuality and class attendance are clearly extremely important. Each absence after the first three (3) will lower your class participation grade one full point. (ie. B+ --> B --> B-)

III. As already stated, laboratory exercises are an essential component of the program. Daily lab. practice increases the pace and quality of your performance and is therefore required. (Cf. Methodology Handout)

IV. It is expected that you will do the workbook exercises concurrently with daily class preparation. Bring your workbook to class for spot checks every time there is an in-class exam.

V.THE ANSWER KEYS TO THE WORKBOOK EXERCISES ARE INCLUDED. Use these productively and fairly.

VI. You will be tested on a per chapter basis. At the end of the semester I will eliminate the lowest score of all your exams. Under most circumstances make-up tests will not be granted Plan ahead.

VII. You will write three (3) compositions during the semester. The use of the ATAJO writing software is all but required. Rewrites are highly recommended. The grade on a rewritten composition will be added to the original grade and averaged on the following formula (75% 1st. draft, 25% 2nd. draft.

VIII. Late compositions will be accepted and corrected but will receive only partial credit. If you are unable to come to class, compositions can be left in my mailbox (Library 218). You have until 5:00 PM on the day an assignment is due to hand it in. Be resourceful; it is your responsibility to hand in your work on time.

IX. At the end of the semester you will be tested by way of a two hour long cummulative examination.

X. Your professor reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions of this syllabus as he sees fit at any point during the semester.

XI. What follows is a detailed account of our future activities. Plan ahead and consult your syllabus daily to make sure that you know what will take place in class.

Note on Videos: Before or after screenings in class videos can be seen again by you at any time. Go to the Media Desk at the Library (Basement) and request the key for Room 042. This key will give you access to a small space equiped with a VCR and a TV monitor. Be extremely careful with the key and the equipment inside. VANDALISM AND THEFT DO TAKE PLACE IN THE LIBRARY. LOCK THE ROOM AFTER YOU EACH AND EVERY TIME THAT YOU EXIT IT. THE RESOURCES INSIDE IT ARE NOT EASY TO REPLACE.
