(Return to Family List)
The barberry family includes apparently disparate members, but they are united by the structure of the flowers. Most species have parts in multiples of 3, with 6 petals, 6 or 9 sepals, and 6 stamens. Achlys is unusual for the family, however, in that it has no sepals or petals and has 9-13 stamens. In all species, the leaves are alternate.
