INSIDE-OUT FLOWER Berberidaceae Inside-out flower is so named because the white sepals and petals are swept backward to reveal the pistil and 6 stamens (=hexandra). This perennial herb grows only 10-40 cm tall with compound leaves twice divided in 3's, with ultimate segments heart- or egg-shaped. The seeds of inside-out flower have fleshy appendages and are ant- (and possibly wasp-) dispersed. Inside-out flower is common in moist shady forest understories from low to middle elevations. |
