Vaccinium parvifolium RED HUCKLEBERRY Red huckleberry is an erect shrub to 4 m tall with bright green, strongly angled stems. The leaves are alternate, mostly deciduous (but a few to many leaves persistent), oval, 1-3 cm long, and smooth-margined. The flowers are small greenish-yellow or pinkish pendent bells borne singly in the axils of leaves on the underside of the branches. The fruits are bright red berries up to 1 cm across, edible but a bit sour. Red huckleberry is very common in coniferous and mixed forests, most often growing out of decaying wood or stumps at low to middle elevations. |
