Pacific rhododendron, the state flower of Washington, is an erect, stout, branched and spreading shrub to 8 m tall. The leaves are alternate, evergreen, thick and leathery, oblong, and 8-20 cm long. The flowers are pink to rose, large, bell-shaped with 5 widely-spreading, wavy-margined lobes 2-4 cm long. The flowers are borne in showy terminal clusters. Pacific rhododendron occurs in moist to fairly dry coniferous or mixed forests from low to middle elevations.
