Arbutus menziesii PACIFIC MADRONE Pacific madrone is a small to medium (usually much under 30 m), evergreen tree. The older bark is cinnamon-red and peels to reveal a smooth medium brown trunk. The alternate leaves are oval, smooth-margined, thick and leathery, shiny dark green above and pale whitish-green below. The white, urn-shaped flowers are in drooping clusters at the stem tips. The fruits are dark orange-red berries. Pacific madrone is common in dry sunny sites at low to middle elevations. |
