(Return to Family List)
The Cuprussaceae includes three genera of gymnosperm shrubs and trees in western Washington: Chamaecyparis, Juniperus, and Thuja. The distinguishing features of this family are their usually scale-like needles and small (4-12 scales), often fleshy, cones. As in all gymnosperms, male and female cones are produced separately, usually on the same plant, but occasionally (Juniperus) on separate male and female plants.
