Home to the renowned palaces and gardens of the Alhambra, Granada
is situated in close proximity to both the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the
Mediterranean Sea. A city with a long history of cultural and religious
diversity, Granada has much to offer students of the arts and humanities.
The University of Granada, founded in 1531, hosts ILACA students at its
Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), located in the heart of the city
in the recently restored palace of Santa Cruz
Academic Program
Students who have at least an advanced intermediate level of Spanish should be able to pass the compulsory placement test and enroll in the Hispanic Studies Courses (advanced-intermediate) or Specific Spanish Studies (intermediate). Students select from a variety of courses in art history, language, culture, politics, geography, history and literature. CLM is fully equipped with modern audiovisual aids and a mixed media library.
The compulsory placement test is given at CLM in Granada shortly after the program starts. The test determines the course level in which you can enroll. Program fees are based on tuition for intermediate and advanced levels. If a student places into Intensive Spanish (elementary level), a supplemental fee will be charged to cover the additional tuition.
Excursions
Students have a group excursion the week before classes begin to explore the art, history and the excitement of Madrid and the surrounding cities of cultural importance. There will also be periodic excursions throughout the semester to take advantage of the history and culture of the region. Excursions are designed to complement and enhance your academic studies and provide a greater understanding of the Spanish culture.
Faculty Director
The faculty director is Maria Lacabe from Pacific Lutheran University. Born and raised in Spain as well as having lived in the U.S. for many years, Dr. Lacabe is in an excellent position to interpret the culture and manners of Spain for participants. She will lead excursions and is available to help students with their academic and personal concerns
CLM's courses are taught in Spanish by the faculty and specialist lecturers of the University of Granada. They are experienced in teaching foreign students Spanish language and culture.
Site Director
Mark Bennett has studied and lived in Granada since 1985. After graduating magna cum laude from University of Leeds, he returned to Granada to be Director of Studies at the Oxford House. He administers the program in Granada and with the visiting NW professor assists students with academic and personal matters. He also arranges the homestays and is the liaison with the University of Granada.
Housing and Meals
Students are lodged with host families who provide three meals a day, bedding and linen as well as an opportunity to extend Spanish speaking outside the classroom.
January Intensive Spanish
For those students wishing to improve their Spanish comprehension and speaking skills before starting the program, CLM offers a four-week intensive Spanish course. AHA can arrange your extra lodging and provide information about the fees and enrollment for this month-long course.
