Geografía
Superficie: 110.922 km. cuadrados. Regiones naturales: la isla
de Cuba, la mayor isla del grupo de las Antillas, la isla de Pinos y otras
menores. La isla de Cuba es en tres cuartas partes plana, con una cuarta
montañosa. La Cordillera de Guaniguanico en el oeste. La Trinidad
Sancti Spiritus en el centro. La Sierra Maestra al este. El resto del territorio
es plano y fértil.
Perfil económico
El 75% de los cubanos son blancos, el 14% son mulatos, el 12% negros
y 1 % son orientales. El 73% del total poblacional es urbano. La
economía cubana está ligada a su clima tropical y a la producción
de azúcar, 7.000.000 TM en 1992 y cuarto lugar en el mundo. La venta
del azúcar le significa a Cuba más del 73% del total de las
exportaciones y esto la hace monoproductora, o dependiente de un sólo
producto. La producción minera, los concentrados y el gas aportan
un 9,2% a las exportaciones cubanas (100.000 TJ de gas natural en 1992,
47.000.000 TM en 1989 de níquel). Los cítricos y otros productos
agrícolas contribuyen un 4% a las exportaciones. Los productos del
mar, pescado preferentemente, representan un 2,4%. El tabaco en bruto y
los productos derivados del mismo son un 1,6% del total de las exportaciones.
En los últimos cinco años, la industria turística
ha crecido significativamente, al igual que la exploración petrolífera,
pero los datos son escasos.
