I met Mrs. Elizondo (Met in the sense of made the acquaintance of, was introduced to.)
7. a la señora Elizondo.
I knew Mrs. Elizondo. (The reference is to a point at which my acquaintance with Mrs. Elizondo had already begun and had not yet ended.)
8. que eran de Taiwan.
I found out (learned, came to know, discovered) that they were from Taiwan.
9. que eran de Taiwan.
I (already) knew that they were from Taiwan.
10. abrir la ventana.
He tried (attempted) to open the window. (He conceived the desire to open the window and acted on it. The reference is to the outcome.)
11. abrir la ventana.
He wanted to open the window. (The sentence describes his mental attitude with no reference to its beginning or its end.)
12. No vender el coche.
He did not succeed in selling the car (did not manage to sell the car). (The implication is that he tried and failed. The reference is to the outcome.)
13. No vender el coche.
He could not sell the car. (The sentence describes a state of affairs, namely, his inability to sell the car. There is no reference to the outcome.)
14. que estudiar.
We had to study. (The implication is that something caused us to have to study and we did: outcome.)
15. que estudiar.
We had to study. (The sentence describes a situation in which we had an obligation to study, but there is no reference to the outcome.)
