Is China’s economic development sustainable or not?  City residents often tell people in the countryside that their industrial development is too dirty.  Although those living in the city—with their own air pollution and over-packaging—have no room to criticize countryside industry, industrial spillover does leave a very large impression.  The Yangtze River, for example, is drying up because people in the countryside are cutting down a lot of its trees.  Peasants do not have enough money to purchase modern capital, so they buy relatively cheap, backward equipment.  Older machinery, aside from being dangerous, is also very inefficient.  Many inputs are wasted, being lost to industrial waste.  People of the underdeveloped countryside are only looking at their development in the short run.

In the long run, polluting industries provide for difficult living conditions.  Polluted air is very hard to breath, and the tap water is undrinkable.  But this question could be solved no matter what.  Even if the benefits of living in a comfortable house and driving a private car outweigh the costs of dirty air, in world competition backward machinery cannot compete.  Sooner or later, Chinese industry will have to be updated.
