Typical rooftops of the Beijing 'hutongs' (胡同), where the houses are
build with a small courtyard in the middle and a wall around it, leaving a
small passageway between the houses and streets.

rebuilt but not replaced by modern tower blocks. Tours are
even offered where for £2, one can get a fully guided tricycle rickshaw
ride around the most famous hutongs. It seems the Beijiners finally realised just
valuable their old homes are both culturally and financially!
