![]() Tolmiea menziesii Piggy-back plant is so-called because of the tendency for new plants to grow out of the bases of the blades of older basal leaves. The leaves are heart-shaped with 3-5 shallow lobes, toothed, and coarsely hairy. The flowering stems are 40-60 cm tall and bear 1-2 smaller leaves. The flowers are brownish-purple with an elongated hypanthium with 5 sepal lobes (3 large and 2 small), 4 purple ribbon-like petals, and 3 stamens. Piggy-back plant is common in moist forests and along streambanks at low to middle elevations. |
