Rhamnus purshiana
CASCARA
Rhamnaceae

Cascara is a shrub or small tree to 10 m tall. It has smooth grey bark that is often collected for its medicinal value. The leaves are alternate (but approach opposite on young growth), deciduous (although young plants may deep their leaves over winter), oval, glossy green, finely toothed, and with prominent pinnate veins. The flowers are small, greenish, and borne in short-stalked clusters in the axils of the leaves. Cascara is common in dry to wet, mixed conifer/deciduous forests, usually on south-facing hillsides at low to middle elevations. It commonly occurs with red alder and vine maple.
