MINER'S LETTUCE Portulacaceae Miner's-lettuce is a small (5-30 cm) annual herb with several small white flowers just above a fused pair of leaves that forms a green disk or shallow cup. The basal leaves are fleshy and long-stalked with spoon-shaped blades. The flowers have 5 petals and the 2 sepals typical of the family. Miner's-lettuce is common in open to shady, meadow or forest sites that are moist in spring; low to middle elevations. Early settlers and miners used miner's-lettuce as a salad vegetable. This species has also been called Montia perfoliata. |
