Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

BEARBERRY, KINNIKINNICK

Ericaceae

Bearberry is a creeping evergreen groundcover generally not over 20 cm tall. The leaves are alternate, leathery, oval, entire and about 3 cm long. They are dark, shiny green above and somewhat paler below. The flowers are pink to white, pendent bells borne in small terminal clusters. The fruits are bright red berries, 7-10 mm, and edible but mealy and tasteless. Bearberry is common on sandy, dry, or rocky slopes, in open areas or dry forest clearings at low to alpine elevations.
